Junior Football League County Final:

Dr. Tierney Park was the venue for the JFL final on Sunday morning last. The pitch & grounds were in pristine condition thanks to the hard work of the field committee despite the desperate weather conditions experienced over the past 2 months. The sun even made a rare appearance which was a nice surprise. Despite having won all their league games comfortably Graig knew the final wasn’t going to be a simple task, and those predictions proved correct. In a fiercely contested game which ebbed and flowed from the throw in it was the home side who gained a strong foothold in the game going two up in the opening minutes with some well taken points from Thomas O’Donnell and Eddie Walsh before Carrickshock finally got off the mark with a well worked score. It was Graig who continued to have the better of the exchanges in the opening half with James Cahill & James Doyle working hard and creating a couple of good goal chances which would just not go in, however they kept the scoreboard ticking over with points from Thomas O’Donnell and Dane Mangan, to lead at half time by 4points to 3. This scoreline ensured the contest was finely balanced going into the 2nd half, but it was Graignamanagh who struck first blood with a well worked goal finished off by O’Donnell and further good points from Eddie Walsh and Ronan Dowling gave Graig a well-deserved lead, however just when it looked like Graig were in cruise control Carrickshock fired back with two goals in quick succession to put the game back in the melting pot. Adam Kennedy & Padraig Whelan pressed forward relentlessly and forced some frees.  Ian Kavanagh brought off a super save to save Graig’s blushes before super sub James Meaney fired to the back of the shock net to extend Graigs lead and give them the safety net they needed to see out the game which remained on a knife edge until the final whistle. This called for some ferocious defending from Hughie Flood, Brendan Foley & Sean Dowling. Seamus Kavanagh, Eddie Dowling & Jim O’Donnell worked their socks off as Carrickshock came in search of that late equalizer. Thankfully when the whistle sounded it was Graig who were in front by 2.11 to 3.05 and Captain Dane Mangan collected the first bit of silverware to come to the club in a while.
